I live in Atlanta, GA and my lawn gets only a couple of hours of full sun per day and was interested in a zoysia lawn. I was told that Palisades Zoysia is the best shade tolerant. Does anyone have this type of grass and can comment on it? I also looked at the cost of sodding zoysia and is very expensive. I am thinking of seeding with Zenith Zoysia which is much cheaper. Does anyone know how shade tolerant Zenith is and how well it works seeding the lawn?

I've been inquiring also for several weeks. This URL: http://www.gardnerturf.com/Zenith%20Zoysia.htm tells you something about it, and you can do a search on my username here for more info...also do a google for zenith zoysia. I believe I'm about sold on zenith, and will seed next spring.

Don't know anything about Palisades, but I'm sure the pro's around here will help.

personal experience: Palisades Zoysia grows well in partial shade. It needs at least 5 hours of light though.

Two hours of sun per day is probably not enough for any zoysia cultivar, so the rest of your issues may be moot points. However, I would not recommend any option other than sod if you are hellbent on zoysia. Zenith seed takes a long time to germinate. With the watering restrictions here in Atlanta, I doubt the Zenith would have much of a chance once you use up your 30 day new lawn watering exemption. Perhaps someone who's grown Zenith successfully will chime in. But like I said, with only two hours of sun you may wish to consider other options. I have empire zoysia, and there are a couple of areas of my yard that might be comparable to the shady conditions you describe. The turf in those areas survives, but it definitely does not thrive like the full sun areas.
